What do you think of Zinedine Zidane being awarded the Golden Ball award?

Even if his performance was one of the best in the World Cup, which is questionable, what he did in the final match is a dispicable and premeditated act that which all sports players and fans should be ashamed. Retired or not, he should be banned from the sport, not given awards!

This wasn't the first time Zidane assaulted a player In 98 WC - he was ejected for stomping on he back of a midfielder, IN 2001, Zidane head butted Jochen Kientz of Hamburger SV in a Champions League match and again received the red card.





It was shameful and should have removed him from eligibility. People speak about this being the beautiful game and honoring the game - Zindane's actions were inexcusable as a player and even more so horrific as he was the captain!!
Reply:personally, the italian goalie should have won the award, 2 goals allowed in the entire tourney, 1 on an own goal the other on a penalty kick. Phenomenal save against Zidane that essentially won the championship. Report It

after what he did in the FINAL game as the CAPTAIN of his team, it is despicable!!!!!! He should be ashamed of himself. Any respect for this man and his career should be forgotten. He disgraced his entire career, but most of all, he disgraced his entire TEAM...
Reply:Ooh this is a controversial one again. I think that despite his unfortunate incident, you have to look at his overall performance as a player and he really does have a great record and his talent cannot be taken away from him, it wouldn't be fair. And don't forget, he is not the only talented player that got the red card, there were many others too!!! There is plenty of bad behaviour around the tournament so rather than point fingers at one individual its best to look at it throughout the cup before casting stones.





It is a silly award since there are many players out there who justly deserve a win for being the best player at the cup, and they should be awarded for goal achievements. I think that there are some great German players who really deserve to be the front winner for "Best Player Award" especially those brilliant goals after the win against Portugal - they were amazing.

Reply:Zidane is probably one of the Greatest (if not THE greatest) players that we will ever see in our lifetime's. As for one bad moment in a game oh well, so be it, it happens. Those of you who are crucifying the man for one moments lapse of clear thinking and sound judgement , have obviously never been in the heat of battle, where exhaustion takes over the only thing that keeps your motor running is emotion. In these moments things like this happen. If you actually the game there was definately jawing going on to provoke the assault. Not saying I condone the act, but I do understand things like this sometimes happen.





Now for the answer to the question: Did he deserve the Golden Ball? Well if you watched the entire tourney, you would have noticed that "les Bleus" looked like "Les Poop", until Zidane returned to 1998-2000 form when he carried the french to not only the WC of 98 but also the EURO Cup of 2000. (side note if you ever have the opportunity to see that tourney, I think it is far more exciting than the WC) Once again we see the great Zidane rise from retirement and CARRY the French all the through to the Finals. Let's not forget if a tremendous save was not made on the header by Zidane (prior to the final header of Zidane's career) we are not even talking about this.





Zidane was the best player in the tourney because HE was the France National Team. and it was proven when they failed to win after he was stupid and got himself thrown off the pitch.

Reply:Yeah, his red card action wasn't the best way to end an international career, but I think the award was brought about more by the fact that he is now retiring from international competition. I think FIFA maybe wanted an honorable sendoff for Zidane, although headbutting an opponent is not the proper way, haha.
Reply:Another reason why soccer should just be disregarded as a sport. His team didn't win, he hurt his team's chances by causing them to go man down, he scored on a penalty kick which he didn't draw and was a bad call to boot....

Reply:Absurd. If nothing else, it makes soccer look like an absolutely absurd sport. What sport gives its top honor to a guy who just committed the biggest atrocity possible.

Reply:i think its terrible. i think italy's keeper should have been given the golden ball, he let in one goal on a pk and one own goal. and zidane's act is inexcusable! even if it was the best performance in the world cup he cost his team the final. if they had zidane to take a pk at the end where he's one of the best they would've had a better chance to win. its ridiculous to give him the golden ball.
